Artist Statement

"I paint because I must.  I paint in encaustic because the nature of the medium is a dialogue.  A plan is in place for a painting, but wax disrupts it.  Sometimes what happens is not what was planned for, so I need to stand back and look, and let the new possibilities that have been opened up wash over me.  It's a dance.  Lead.  Pause.  Be Led.  Because my chosen subject is the figure, this approach seems apt.  The story, what the figure has to tell, is a mystery to me.  The pauses, followed by moments of strengthing sections of the canvas, allow for a glance or gesture to emerge in the painting that speaks to the collective unconcious.  My paintings work when a viewer can look at one and feel less alone."
