Charles-Ernest de Belle was born in Budapest of a Hungarian mother and a French father. He traveled to Antwerp in 1885 to begin his studies, and then on to continue studies in Paris (1889) and England (1893). De Belle came to Canada in 1912 to establish himself as a painter of portraits and joined the Associate Royal Canadian Academy in 1919. He died in Montreal in 1939.
