Artist Statement

The sensual quality of life is what first appeals to me and I like this to be the initial impact in my work.  Economic, efficient and intelligent use of materials makes sense of my nature.  Use of more than one medium encourages contrast, adding yet another dimension to the work.  The physical aspect both in the painting itself and the action of making it are important as I believe this is the subject matter, the colour, line, form and resonance of execution.  I look for presence in my work whether as subtle as that of a flower or as noteworthy as that of a great individual.  I want to feel its absence when it is gone.  Often I work from life.  It allows me to do all the translating, instilling life, giving it content independence of subject matter.  I appreciate most what is simple yet sublime.  Regardless of depth, I am interested in genuine experience.  If it is real it is worth making note of, no matter how small.  It is something to believe in.  We don't believe in much anymore and I think painting even modest inspiration is a small way to begin again.

Generally I do not discuss work in terms of technique.  It is an observation made hindsight and reduces making art to a potential formula.  Instead process, inspiration, research, study and experiment are tantamount to staying fresh and strong.  Developing your own individual language and observations is the point and I believe this happens over time through practice.  My medium is acrylic as I gave up oil when it made me ill.  Acrylic has made sense of my natural inclinations as I work directly, deliberately and dynamically.  I work in other mediums that appeal to me and use them consisten to my interests in colour and line.  Drawing was my first inclination as a youth and colour is my fascination, so making sense of the two is a constant.  Most of my work can be discussed in this regard.  Recently I have discovered strength in form so I have been playing with that.  I work in acrylic on canvas and also paper.  I also draw in anything black, conte, china marker and india ink.  I do let myself experiment but do not pursue unless there is enough inspiration to sustain a whole body of work.  This keeps things fresh, strengthens and makes me run into the studio every morning.
